State Fair rejection 2026

I'm starting a new tradition of sharing the photo I submitted to the Minnesota State Fair fine arts competition... since it will not be displayed at the State Fair :-(. This year I decided to highlight my concert photography by picking one of hundreds of photos I have taken of the Minnesota Saints Chorale & Orchestra during their Lamb of God concerts over the years. I called it "Witnesses."

We'll try again next year!

State Fair submission 2024

Well, my photo did not make the cut for the State Fair fine arts exhibit this year. It is not my first rejection, and it won't be my last.

(Omri took the below photo of me and my submission.)

Dollhouse in Despair

You may have already seen my post on Facebook about this, but I wanted to mention it here too. I had a photo accepted into the Minnesota State Fair this year for the first time since 2016 (despite having tried every year since). I'm honestly surprised it got in--I picked the photo to submit because I happened to have it already printed for my exhibition at our church last year. Also to my surprise, somebody appears to have purchased it?!? Don't get too excited; I wasn't asking for much.

Anyway, we attended the fair today, so I'll be posting some family photos from our visit soon. I also have a ton of photos from our latest trip to Camp Du Nord that I need to sort through.

Here's a closer look:

State Fair submission 2018

Sorry for the slow-down on the blog this week. I've been concentrating on a video project for our church, and video work is like a black hole for time.

Below is my submission to the Minnesota State Fair fine arts competition. Unfortunately, it didn’t make the cut. It is a composite image of a retired steam engine (on display in Cloquet, MN) placed in a rock-cut found between Gilbert and Virginia, MN that is now part of a bike path. The bit of railroad track you see is a separate photo taken down the street from our place here in Shoreview.

I had been planning for this image since the last time I had a piece accepted into the fair, two years ago. I thought it would be cool to see a locomotive running through this Iron Range landmark. I wish the rock face was more exposed, but it is much more overgrown than it was in my youth. I remember when it was a gravel trail and much less accessible before it became a part of the Mesabi trail system.

Back to the drawing board, I guess. At least I can finally share the image.

More photos of the kids are coming soon!

State Fair exhibition

My photo titled "The Gilbert Laundromat" was accepted into the fine arts exhibition at the Minnesota State Fair. I'm honored (and a little surprised) to have it included among some seriously impressive, inspiring works of art.

Here I am with my submission at a preview event held at the fairgrounds Tuesday night.

If I had known it had a real chance of being accepted, I would have printed the photo larger and put more thought into the frame choice... things to think about for next year.

Here's a closer look at the work:

Thanks for all the support!

Fall contest submission

The city of Shoreview is holding a fall photography contest and this is what I submitted:

I'm really happy with how it turned out. It's a great combination of cute kids, late afternoon light, and manual settings on the camera (50mm, f/2, 1/400s, ISO 200). If I have a regret, it's that you can't see Veronica's face, although that is sort of intentional because this is meant to be an impersonal, commercial image. Omri's face works because it is masked in pure joy.

Thanks to everybody who helped me get this shot. The kids endured three separate photo sessions, one of which included my nephew Ezra (who still gets a cut of the prize money if we happen to win). R also helped by deftly dropping an armful of leaves on the kids about 20 times. And thanks to Shoreview for holding the contest. I hope they continue these because I do my best work when offered a challenge.

Tea for two

This seems appropriate for Father's Day.  I took these with the tripod last weekend to enter a photo contest with the theme "Dad at the tea party."  We didn't win but at least I get to keep these shots out of the deal.

I wasn't sure what exactly the judges were looking for, so we tried a more natural one...

And a slightly more flamboyant one...

Oh well, maybe next time.

Cast your vote

Voting is now open for the avocado baby photo contest that I mentioned previously.  If you have a Facebook account and you think Veronica is the cutest baby you've seen eat an avocado, please vote for her right here.  Thanks!

Avocado contest

I'm trying to decide which of these photos to enter into a contest being held by the California Avocado Commission.  The idea is to submit a "photo of your child eating or enjoying an avocado." If you're interested, here's the full set of rules.  I'd love your input on the decision.  Please review the three choices and vote on which one you think I should submit using the poll below. Thanks!

This one is not a contender, but I thought it was too cute not to post:

Which photo should I submit to the contest?

Veronica should be a shoe-in for this... Avocado is the first solid food she's ever eaten!
