State Fair submission 2024

Well, my photo did not make the cut for the State Fair fine arts exhibit this year. It is not my first rejection, and it won't be my last.

(Omri took the below photo of me and my submission.)

And here's a closer look:

Winnipeg Folk Fest 2024 - 35mm edition

I'm going to be parsing out some of these photos on my MLMM Instagram account over the next few weeks, but followers of this blog get to see them all together up front. These are the film shots I took in Winnipeg this year. I limited myself to one roll of 36 exposures over the three days of the festival, which really got me to stop and question if a shot was worth taking. Other times, I had to act fast and not over think it. Most of these are photo-journalistic in style and off-topic for a family photo blog, but my Folk Fest coverage would not feel complete without them, so here you go...

My biggest challenge with this old, manual camera is getting human eyes in focus. I'm still learning to embrace the technical imperfections. That said, it's hard to take a bad photo of little Alice:

My favorite shot from the roll:

Palmyra:

The campground:

The bike lot:

Big Blue Stem at golden hour:

My ISO 200 film speed was a little slow for these late-day shots.

Something productive from the 45 minutes I spent waiting in line for a plain hamburger:

Festival sights:

Alice and the cheeseballs:

An older kid at the beach, also indulging in the cheeseball:

Ruth Moody:

Band of Horses:

This is what I'm here for:

Getting a little experimental... This maybe shouldn't make the cut, but I'm starting to like it:

It is challenging to photograph strangers straight-on, in front of them, without their permission, but getting over it can open you up to a whole new world of photography.

Winnipeg Folk Fest 2024 - iPhone edition

I did not bring my big camera to Folk Fest this year. I definitely missed having it -- for better shots of the family and for capturing musicians on stage -- but it was so nice to not have to lug it around or worry about it getting wet. (It was also against the policy of the festival for me to bring it in.)

I did, however, bring my film camera with which I took exactly 36 shots. I hope to post some of those within a week or two, after development. The ones below are iPhone only.

It was a fun year at the fest!

We had good tarp spots on Friday and Saturday.

Ready for another day outside... It was the hottest weather we've had at the festival in a while, nearing 90 degrees on Friday and Saturday, I think.

There's one of my sweet boy's face:

Veronica and I met Anais Mitchell who is wrote/developed the Hadestown musical that Veronica saw on Broadway in February. She was performing with her band Bonnie Light Horsemen at the festival.

Little Alice was the cutest baby there:

Daily trips to the beach were a must this year.

Good representation from R's side of the family this year. Ezra was at the festival but not in the photo. Our friend Ben and his son are also missing.

Alice developed a love of the cheese ball:

We ended up with the same exact campsite two years in a row. Veronica had her own space in our old tent.

R handled the tarp shuffle in the rain on Saturday morning while I had a cup of coffee in the tent (with a sleeping Omri):

Alice loves watching her big girl cousin:

These guys got along pretty well this year!

Malt stop:

Just a few video clips to share some of the Folk Fest vibe:

The 4th continues at Extremely Pleasant Lake

We drove out to Linda's place on the afternoon of the 4th.

The fireworks in Longville were quite impressive!

Friday was a nice day for a swim!

Cousin Lennon was visiting grandma as well, which worked out great for keeping Omri occupied.

The photo on the right is a remake of a photo I took in 2018, which has since been turned into a watercolor painting.

Thank you, Linda, for hosting us at your beautiful place on the lake!
